  • Available Border Collies

All of the Border Collies that come into our rescue are thoroughly temperament tested, and live with us, right in our homes. That way, we get to know their personalities in and out, so we can find the best possible match, for them and for you!

Meet Tess — not yet up for adoption black and white puppy in a pink and blue coatMeet our new foster pup, this is Tess. she was found in a cold open barn, not much cover, tied, frozen water. she was sold to a elderly couple, at 5weeks of age. Tess's rescuer came upon her, by word of mouth and had to check things out. She took Tess at that time.

Tess update: Miss Tess's vet appointment went very well. The Vet thought Tess was 12 weeks old and does weigh #12 pounds. Since she recieved her shots and borditella, she was allowed to join the small dog group at doggy day care the next day.

    Meet Speck
black and white border collie walking in the snow
Speck update: Speck has really come to life in the last couple of months. She enjoys going for walks every day and keeps up with me no problem but doesn't want to run with the young dogs. She would make a nice companion for someone who is looking for an easy dog to keep. She enjoys meeting new people and comes into work with me on occasion.

    Meet Dave

black and white border collie - head only
Dave update: Dave is back with us through no fault of his. A dog that was in his adopted household decided that she didn't like him and was picking on him. Even though the adopter worked with a behaviorist, the other dog wouldn't give Dave any peace and the hard decision was made to bring him back.

Dave has gained some much needed weight and his coat is in wonderful condition now. He hasn't had any problems with his foster mom's other dogs and is happy to be in a household where everyone gets along. He enjoys playing with the younger dogs and still is happy to play with toys all by himself.

He is crated some of the time and at other times he's loose in the house, but still goes in the crate when he wants to sleep. Dave is a sweetheart of a dog who is looking for a loving family to adopt him.

    black and white border collie

Dave is a senior citizen that we picked up July 29th from the shelter in Wausau. He was dropped off at a farm with cattle sometime in June and then taken to the shelter. He's 10 years old tri-color Border Collie and seems to be in good health. He's been neutered, he's up to date on vaccinations, and heartworm negative.

He's gotten along with all of our dogs-Border Collies, Boston Terrier and guard dogs out with the sheep. He's not very interested in the sheep or cattle. At the shelter they evaluated him with cats and said no cats. Since he's been coming into work with me every day we've been working with him and the print shop cat, redirecting his attention with toys and letting him know that it's ok to just let her go when she runs by, so he may be alright with some more work in a home with one cat.

He's been coming out while we're doing chores and he's just interested in hanging out with us-he doesn't wander at all. He enjoys running along with the mule. He likes to play in the creek that runs across part of the farm. He's been trying to catch some frogs but hasn't yet. He also like to run with the younger dogs when they play "race and chase".

black and white border collie stanting on a driveway with a farm behind himHe can walk on a leash, and we've been working on his not flopping over onto his back when we are walking. He walks very well off leash-we have a half mile driveway so all of our dogs are off leash at home.

We haven't been keeping him in a crate during the day or overnight because he's had some issues with going potty in there. If he's loose or tied to me or a desk he doesn't have any problem. We've also been leaving him loose in one room in the house at night and he hasn't had any accidents then. He does go in the crate to be fed and then stays in for an hour or two at a time. He has no food aggression and takes bones nicely. He's made it thru a couple of thunderstorms without any signs of sound sensitivity.

Dave is looking for a home where he can spend the golden years of his life. He enjoys being petted (a lot), grooming, playing with soft toys and a few special squeeky ones. He likes to ride in the car and is very polite about jumping in and then just looks out the window while we're driving.

If you think that Dave might be the dog for you please email Laura at LauraLWentz@aol.com

    Joey — in sanctuary

black and white border collieHi everyone, my name is Joey, or Joe for short and I am about a year and half old, can't really say for sure, but that is what my vet thinks my age is.

I was rescued by a sweet lady who saw that I was chained up and had to walk around and lie down in chicken poop. Yuck, that wasn't very pleasant and the flies were so bad I had big sores on my ears from scatching their bites all the time.

But my ears are healed now, and I am being fostered by RoseMarie and love running in the backyard and learning some commands. I was neutered and have had all my shots, and my nice vet said I was pretty healthy.

I still have to learn some other things so I am not ready to be adopted yet, but hopefully very soon I can be put up for adoption and find my forever home.

When I was chained up I didn't have much exposure to other dogs, or people and lots of things scare me so we're working on all that.

I did learn to go into my crate, know sit and down, and now am housebroken too... so you can see I am a smart little guy.

    June update:

I can't stop thinking about how Joey's life would have been if we had not taken him into rescue.....wondering if he would be fed that day, drinking out of dirty, warm water, when he did have it,,,,fighting the flies and scratching like mad, being confined to the few feet of chain that bound him.

And now he has free run of a large yard, his own little pool, walks, car rides, and his food is always on time. And his big grins when he sees his food bowl come out is a pure joy to see.

Many would say, well you should have had him temp. tested, or why take in a dog with such a deprived background, but all the reasons wouldn't have stopped me from taking him from that deplorable condition.

And that is what rescue looks like.

And he WILL find his forever home ...

    March update:

Poor Joey will be in sanctuary for awhile and will not be on our 'adoptable' list. He will still be in his foster home and have the same experiences and loving care.

If you would like to contribute to Joey's fund while he is in sanctuary, please send a check to

as he will still need heartworm and flea protection, food, treats, chews, etc.
Many thanks from Joe and 2nd Chance.

    December update:

Joey's class has been postoned til after the holidays, so nothing new to report there, but he has learned to shake and wait at the door before bolting out into the yard to do his zoomies.......he's really liking the snow but gets cold pretty quickly due to his short coat. Wish I had a coat for him.

He wishes everyone a happy and safe Holiday ----- due to unexpected large vet bills recently our rescue isn't able to provide a lot of xmas gifts to our foster dogs,,,,,but he will be getting a nice new warm blanket for his crate.

    January update:

Joe had a good Holiday season and wasn't at all bothered by the neighborhood firecrackers on New Year's Eve.

He was much more relaxed at his training class and loved the cheese curd treats that Patti gave him. Thanks to For Pet's Sake training facility for donating the class for Joey.

He also has learned to 'play' with the busy ball, a plastic ball with a hole in the middle that dispenses treats when the dog rolls it around, and when a friend's bc, Grady came over he and Joe had a good time chasing around in the yard.

Everyday, it seems he is gaining more confidence and now comes up to me for petting and attention. This might not seem like a big deal to most dogs, but with him it shows a growing sense of trust to humans.

Lately he's been interested in the snowmobiles as they zip around the lake, and I think he would love to get out of the fence and run along side of them.

People often remark on how good looking he is, and now we are beginning to see how smart he is too.

If you would like more information on Joe, please contact his foster Mom, RoseMarie at rmr6616@charter.net He is being fostered in Delavan, Wi.

    November update:

Joey has discovered the joys of running, and run he does, zoomie around the yard so much he actually has dug up the grass to make himself a track. As he was chained up most of his short life, this is a real thrill for him, and he is showing muscle and form.

He's also participating in a training class, and the exposure to new surroundings and people will do him a lot of good. When he meets other dogs in the class or on our walks he is friendly and curious.

I've taken him walking in the woods, where he is loose and always runs back to see if I'm still there and comes when called to be hooked back up to a leash, and walks nicely back to our house.

As a shy dog, with limited exposure to the outside world, it will take time for de-sensitizing and showing him that the world isn't that scary place he thought it was.

    1 year update:

It's been a year since Joey has come into rescue ... from a scared, skinny dog with bloodied ears, unsure of the fact that he could actually run around and not be stopped by a short chain around his neck ... to a happier and more confident handsome guy ... even though he still has some 'issues' we are working on, he continues to move forward ... and can be adopted to someone who will understand his 'quirks' and work with him.

thanks to everyoe who supports our mission with Joey.
